Second Year Boys Soccer Final Match Report

07-April-22

Second Year Boys Final

On Tuesday morning the Maynooth second year boys made their way down to Newbridge town astro to take on St Paul's in the Midlands B final. Still riding their high from their terrific win last Friday against Portlaoise college the boys were in high spirits. Arriving in Newbridge we were greeted with a wind that would blow you over and cut you in two at the same time, not ideal conditions for such an important match. Despite the conditions, both teams were straight in from the start and it was looking close. Maynooth got off to the ideal start when a pinpoint accurate corner from Ciaran Glover met the head of Conor McInerney to put Maynooth 1 nil up. However, their lead was cut short when a corner from St. Paul’s found its way into the back of the net. 1-1. It was clear they were going to have to work hard.

The boys continued to play well with great defending from Finn Byrnes, Adam Nolan, and some fancy footwork from Fionán de Faoite on the wing, however, the wind was proving to be a challenge for the boys in blue. St. Paul’s were awarded a free kick just outside the box but were kept out by the solid Maynooth wall. Maynooth came close to taking the lead when a shot from Kian Brunton hit the post and fell to the feet of Alan Dolan, who unfortunately was caught just offside. Half time came and tensions were high.

The second half started and Maynooth were on top, but the game still looked as if it could go either way. Loud support from the sideline kept the lads going and eventually a flick-on from Alan Dolan was smacked into the back of the net by Ronan Corcoran to give Maynooth the lead. St. Paul’s attempted a comeback but Maynooth held firm and nothing was getting past them. Despite their lead, Maynooth continued to work hard and sealed their win when a beautiful shot from Kian Brunton from outside the box floated into the top of the goal.

The final whistle blew and victory was Maynooth’s. The team erupted into triumphant cheers as hugs were shared with teammates, supporters and beaming coaches Mr. Larkin and Mr. Fagan. Maynooth Captain Adam Nolan presented the boys with their medals and cheers rang out across the pitch as the boys lifted their well-deserved trophy. They returned to the school victorious for celebratory pizzas. Outstanding performances from all the boys especially Adam Nolan, Finn Byrnes, Conor McInerny, and our man of the match Ciaran Glover.

Congratulations boys and best of luck now in Leinsters!
