West Leinster’s Track and Field

Maynooth Education campus had a hugely successful West Leinster’s campaign this year bringing back a massive 10-medal haul from the 2-day event along with some other important wins.

Day 1

Tuesday the 5th of April saw athletes from both Maynooth Community College and Maynooth Post Primary compete in events such as Javelin, 100m sprint, 300m sprint, 400m sprint, 1500m, 1500m Steeplechase. Layla Mathias and Kate Gormley qualified for their finals from tough heats with Layla going on to win gold in the 100m sprint. To add to this Katy Hayes and Áine McCauley both gifted us bronze medals in the 1500m, and Joseph Richards finished off the day with another bronze medal in the 1500m Steeplechase for Maynooth. Finally, the most important win of the day was for Ms. O’Shea and the Boy’s relay team which defied the odds in their race. Gerry bet against the wrong horse on the day and was bitter in defeat after the result of the boy’s race. He now owes Ms. O’Shea a McDonald’s and is gone to lick his wounds. Other than that there were happy heads all around everyone else on the bus home!

Day 2

Thursday the 7th of April had the students competing in the 200m sprint, 800m, 4*300m relay, 2000m, 3000m, and the long jump. Layla Mathias and Kate Gormley both shone again by winning their very tough 200m sprint heats and qualifying for the finals, both the girls then went on to bring home our 2 bronze medals for the day from this event. In the middle-distance events Saoirse Reynolds and Tom Gormley shone and brought home 2 silver medals with Áine McCauley just missing out on a bronze medal position in the same event. Finally, in the 2000m Niamh McDonald and Aoife McNerney began the day for us on a high by bringing home both the Silver and the Gold in same race with Aoife making a great move into second position in the fifth and final lap of the race. Gerry Robinson was a very happy man coming home and you couldn’t keep him away from the camera all day.

Comhghairdeas mór to all the students who took part: Layla Mathias, Katy Hayes, Olivia Chrachol, Harry Cahill, Alex Broome, Áine McCauley, Joseph Richards, Karan Pillay, Jack Hourigan, Colm Durkan, Oisín Synott, Tom Gormley, Kate Gormley, Charlie Reilly, Anna Killian, Maria Irinei, Saoirse Reynolds, Aoife McNerney, Niamh McDonald, Oles Shynruk, Paul Hourigan, Conor McNerney, Cathal McKenna, and Nick Dalton.

The Leinster’s track and field event will take place on the 18th and the 21st of May in Santry. Go n-éirí go geal libh!
